LGBTQ+ Representation in Yoga (and a Chest-Opening Practice!)

Why does LGBTQ+ representation in Yoga matter?

Queer folx often feel excluded from yoga classes in gyms and studios. When they look around classes, they see people who don't look like them or who have very different lifestyles.

Yoga has the potential to be an inclusive practice, one that reflects the diversity of the traditions in which it originated and the communities in which it is practiced.

Yet many yoga instructors and studios unintentionally exclude LGBTQ+ folx from their classes by neither recognizing the needs of the community nor the role it plays in yoga philosophy and history.

In the video below, I talk to Jivana Heyman about my Embodied Inclusion: LGBTQ+ Representation in Yoga workshop at the Accessible Yoga Conference.

I reflect on my work in activist and nonprofit spaces, ignorance of LGBTQ+ issues, and how Queer Yoga enables me to be a changemaker and create intentional brave spaces and gathering places for queer folx from all over the world.

I offer a heart-opening practice that is beneficial for people who practice chest binding, who have had top surgery, or who spend a lot of time on Zoom.
